There is no doubt that conical posts have the advantage of following the anatomical course of the root. This is particularly important in the apical area of the tooth since - compared with cylindrical root posts - less dentin has to be removed and thus perforation or fracture of the root is avoided.

The use of Perma-dor® root posts allows substance-preserving preparation of the root canal since, due to direct casting of precious metal, even in the case of oval or funnel-shaped canals optimum adaptation to root canal is ensured.

In the direct method (e.g. titanium posts) you would have to select a considerably larger post diameter (yellow) in order to obtain the contact to the canal wall that is required for retention.

No shrinkage cavities (hollow spaces): Optimum security against fracture.
 
   
The micro-section of a cast root post has numerous small hollow spaces, so-called shrinkage cavities (fig.1). The largest number of shrinkage cavities can be clearly seen in the transitional area between the post and the core build-up; therefore a fracture of the root post will most likely occur in this area. The different cooling times of the thin post element compared to the massive core build up are responsible for the formation of shrinkage cavities (so-called suction/vacuum cavities).

If the direct-cast Perma-dor® root post is used, the post acts as a cooling device through which the heat can escape more quickly after the supra-structure is cast on. The cold-formed Perma-dor® root post has a homogeneous, inclusion-free, metallographic structure which withstands maximum physical and chemical stress (fig. 2). With the Perma-dor® root post no shrinkage cavities will occur in this area, which has the highest risk of fracture.
